9 TIPS FOR PART-TIME ENTREPRENEURS
Not every entrepreneur throws himself full time on realizing his or her dream.
In the Netherlands, part-time entrepreneurship is popular.
Nine tips for people who want to run a business next to their job.
1) Be prepared to sacrifice free time
Jogging or watching TV? You will not have much time for your hobbies if you start a business next to your full-time job. You have to be sure that this sacrifice is worth it otherwise your job and your company will suffer.
2) Use every available minute
Use your lunch break or the early morning to make phone calls. Use the travel time in the train to read overdue documents.
3) Make use of technology and time differences
If you do business with people in other parts of the world, you can make use of the difference in time zones by calling early in the morning or just after work at the boss. Use a smartphone to e-mail with customers.
4) Keep your eyes focused on what you have to do
If you are at work with your boss, you must ensure that the focus is on your work. Do not get lost with your thoughts about your own business.
5) Do not exceed limits
Making calls with customers for your own company when you work for your boss is a gray area. Make good agreements with your employer about this. The use of services and goods from your employer for your own company is not done.
6) Be honest
Only you can best assess your own situation, but in most cases it is advisable to inform your boss about your part-time company. As long as you do not fish in the same pond as your boss there will be little reason for your boss to be against it. You will feel better when you are open about it, because it gives your boss the feeling that you are honest instead of making him feel that you have something to hide.
7) Capital
Provide sufficient capital. Research shows that starters without money have little or no chance.
8) How much time do you spend in your company?
In order to qualify for entrepreneur's allowance, you must invest 1225 hours in your enterprise on an annual basis. If you work full-time this is harder to realize than if you work part-time. But there is a danger for people who work part-time and also start doing business. The time you thought to have for your family is often swallowed up by your own company. This simply takes more time than you estimate in advance.
9) Engage your family with your company
Whether it concerns answering phone calls or packing orders. As family members help you save time anyway. An additional aspect is that your family becomes directly involved with your company.
